James worked with horses most of his life. As a boy he was apprenticed to Head Groom for the Ellis family in Lincoln later to become groom at Blakeny Hall. He was the whipper in for the local hunt looking after the hounds. After marriage he moved to Sheffield where he drove a coach and four for the Royal Mail between Sheffield and Manchester. After Margaret died in childbirth James returned to Lincoln with baby Doris He met Jane Horner nee Jessop (widow) who had a som Vincent. James and Jane went onto have three more children together, Ida, James and Kathleen. After retirement he bred wire haired terriers, he was also the local unofficial vet for the local animals.
