b. March 30, 1885 in Perry, Ohio. Married Ellen Halton; educated, Kenyon College (LL.B. 1906) and Columbia Law School 1909. Was admitted to the New York Bar 1910, is a member of American Bar Ass'n., New York State Bar Ass'n., New York County Bar Ass'n., International Law Ass'n., as well as the Supreme Court of the United States. He has argued many cases involving LaFollette Seaman's Act, the passage of which he helped to secure; Author of "Rights and Duties of Merchant Seaman" 1917, second edition 1937; "Sea Docket" 1924-26; Merchant Seamen's Law, 1943; was a member of the League of Nations; the local School Board; State Assembly--29th Dist. 1915-16; Roome Lodge A.F. & A.M.; Alpha Delta Phi; Episcopal Church; is President of the Axtell Richmond Realty Corp.; Atty. for Seaman's Branch of Legal Aid Society 1910-16; Eastern and Gulf Sailors Ass'n; Neptune Ass'n. Masters and Mates; Marine Fireman's Union; Marine Cooks and Stewards Ass'n; National Seaman's Union of England, Germany and other European Countries; attended International Merchant and Marine Officers Assn. at Geneva, Switzerland, as legal advisor to Andrew Furuseth, International Seaman's Union 1926, helped settle the great maritime strikes on the Pacific Coast in 1934; was a member of the Mohawk and Morro Castle Proctors' Comm. for Seaman and passengers 1935; a member of the American Labor Delegation to Russia 1927. Filed minority report opposing recognition of Russia; made many broadcasts on national hook-up on subjects of public interest; enlisted in Chemical Warfare service during World War I. On March 12th, 1941, he founded the United Democracies of the World, and in the summer of 1941, he became one of the founders of World Federalists, which is legally known as Federal World Government, Inc., of which he is a member of the Administrative Board, 29 East 28th Street, New York. His hobbies are tennis, golf, hunting, fishing, riding and yachting. He is practicing law in New York City, resides on a farm at Little Britain, Orange Co., N.Y. For years he has been interested in the Axtell Genealogy and has devoted much time as well as money to insure its publication. [axb45.ged]
