Note on Wife: Mary Emeline AXTELL

b. July 17, 1850. m. Sept. 21, 1874 Julius Byles at Titusville, Pa. where she

lived until her death in 1910. Mr. Byles was a thorough believer in higher

education, he not only put himself through college, but sent his three

brothers through as well. He was an able attorney, and a firm believer in

good government.




Emma Axtell Byles, b. Nov. 17, 1877, graduate of Smith College 1898, m.

Allan Cowperthwait of Brooklyn, N.Y. Jan. 17, 1903, he was an electrical

engineer, a graduate of Cornell 1894, his business took him to the distant

parts of the world, she too was an extensive traveler, spending much time

abroad. He was in the Navy during the Spanish-American war, was Lt. Col. in

World War I. He died in Nov. 1923. they have two daughters; Marion Axtell

Byles, m. 1931, Dr. Wm. Frederick Roth Jr. of Kansas City; he is now (1945)

in charge of Psychopathic Hospital in Hawaii, they have two sons. Eleanor,

the younger daughter, m. Remmelt Jan Beyer, in 1938 in Holland, but retuned

to the U.S.A. in 1940, they have two children.


Florence Laura Byles, b. June 20, 1879, educated at Smith College 1901, m.

Joseph M. Barr of Oil City, Pa. where they still live. He is a graduate of

Amherst, they have a son, Joseph W. Jr. now Lt. in Navy.


Axtell Julius Byles, b. Oct. 20, 1880, a graduate of Princeton 1903,

studied law and practiced with his father in Titusville for a number of

years, m. Florence Paque of Titusville 1905 or '06, went to N.Y. City in 1917

as head of the legal department of Tide Water Oil, became president and about

1934 became president of American Petroleum Institute; he was an outstanding

business man, a born leader. He died Sept. 1941. His oldest son, Julius

Byles, a graduate of Princeton, and a promising young lawyer in now (1945)

Captain in A. C. C. end of 5th Army in Italy. His youngest son, Axtell Byles,

an Ensign in U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific.
