Note on Husband: William Harvey AXTELL (1)

b. Nov. 27, 1816, in Washington Co., Pa. He was educated in Meadville Academy

and Allegheny College. He followed his father in the medical profession and

was associated with him from 1840 to the retirement of his father in 1852,

when he continued the practice at Sheakleyville, Pa. He was twice married,

(1) to Mary Jane Lindley, June 17, 1841, (she was born Nov. 10, 1818, and was

the daughter of Moses Lindley of Crawford Co.; she died Aug. 25, 1856); he m.

(2) Sarah Ann Showers June 4, 1857 (she was born June 4, 1832 and was the

daughter of John S. and Harriet Showers; she died at Sheakleyville, Dec. 15,

1897). He served as school director for 20 years, was County Coroner in 1863,

a Presbyterian and a Prohibitionist. Like his father, he was very successful

in his profession. After 45 years of practice, he had the pleasure of seeing

his son, John L., enter the profession, being the third generation in the

practice of medicine. He died Sept. 19, 1906, at Sheakleyville, where he had

spent the greater part of his life.

2-Nov 1851 Dr. W.H. Axtell reports an epidemic of dysentery that was extensive and fatal in Sandy Creek and New Vernon Townships. Began in July and ended about today (1888, 281)

Dr. McElrath charges $.25 for office calls and as high as $.50 for house calls;[2] John and William Bigler become governors of California and Pennsylvania respectively at the same time;[1] company houses in Sharon are built to accommodate workers;[25] (Nov. 2) Dr. W. H. Axtell reports an epidemic of dysentery that is extensive and fatal in Sandy Creek and New Vernon townships;[4] Liberty, Pine, Deer Creek, New Vernon, and Perry townships are created; Georgetown is incorporated as Sheakleyville[29]
