Note on Husband: Pliny Fisk AXTELL (1)

b. Aug. 19, 1829 in Fairfield, Mercer Co., Pa., m. (1) Oct. 10, 1854, Sarah

Rice (b. Nov. 26, 1829, d. July 8, 1864 in Warren Co., Ill.); (2) Martha A.

Hitchcock, March 25, 1867. He moved from Pa. to Warren Co., Ill. in 1850. In

1873 he moved to Reno Co., Kansas and in 1875 to Sterling, Rice Co., Kansas,

where he died Sept. 20, 1887, He was one of those pushing pioneer farmers who

made the western wilderness a fertile region. He was a man that the common

people took off their hats to, not because of the bold front but because he

was modest and commanded self respect for real personal worth. He was away in

front of the procession in this line, including church work, but political

schemes he had nothing to do with. He was a farmer and grower on a large

scale, and left a large estate in "this world's good but far more in a good

character and noble life."

Note on Husband: Pliny Fisk AXTELL (2)
