Note on Husband: Daniel AXTELL

b. Feb. 22, 1787, at Sutton, Mass.; married in 1809 Jane Wellman (b. Oct. 26, 1791), the daughter of a Revolutionary soldier of Belgrade, Me. He made his home in Peru, Mass. Here seven of his children were born. In 1822 he moved to Pittsfield, Lorain Co., O., and two years later to what was known as the "Home Place" in Russia township, near South Amherst, Lorain Co. It is said that his was the first frame dwelling erected in Lorain Co. In 1898 the house, much enlarged, was owned and occupied by one of the descendants. He was a generous man, a clear thinker with a judicial mind, and he was regarded as an authority in all practical matters. During his whole life he was a leading man in his immediate section of the country. He was a strict Baptist with the most rigid principles, a deacon during all his later life. He had a tall, powerful frame, an excellent specimen of the best Puritan type. He was a Whig in politics, differing from his nine sons and even his wife who were Democrats. He died Aug. 20, 1856, and was buried in the family lot in South Amherst. His wife died Mar. 26, 1873. [axb45.ged]
