Note on Husband: Henry AXTELL

b. June 9, 1773 at Mendham, N.J. About 1797 he married Hannah Cook, daughter

of Capt. Daniel Cook, an officer in the Revolutionary Army. He graduated from

Princeton College in 1796 and later received the degree of Doctor of Divinity

from the same college. After conducting an Academy in Mendham for about ten

years, he concluded to seek a wider field for his labors, and moved to

Geneva, Ontario Co., N.Y. At Geneva he established an institution of

learning, which was afterwards known as "Geneva College." On July 12, 1812,

he was ordained as associate pastor with Rev. J. Chapman of the Presbyterian

Church of Geneva. Mr. Chapman died the next year, and Mr. Axtell became sole

pastor, which position he held until his death, Feb. 11, 1829. In his

ministry he was very successful. His personal appearance was pleasing. He was

6 ft. in height, spare in flesh. His manners were simple, not in the least

affected. In social life he exhibited a genial Christian spirit, never

multiplying words beyond measure, and never making them vehicles of

trivialities or of evil speech. The general sentiment respecting him was that

he was one of the best men that ever lived. His widow died in 1840, aged 65.

Note on Wife: Hannah COOK

daughter of Capt. Daniel Cook.
