Note on Husband: Joseph AXTELL

b. in Grafton, Mass., 1763. A private in Capt. Howe's Co., Col. Rand's rgt.,

1780. He married Ruth Haywood Mar. 29, 1792. With other pioneers he went to

Vermont about 1787. The settlement was first called Thomlinson, but many of

the citizens were anxious to change the name of the place to that of the town

from which they came. To give all a fair chance to the right to name the

town, the privilege was sold at auction Oct. 1, 1792; and Joseph Axtell was

the successful bidder, paying for the privilege the sum of five dollars. He

named the town Grafton. He died April 11, 1813.
