Note on Husband: Henry AXTELL

b. May 3, 1761, in Berkley, Mass. A tradition among his descendants runs as

follows: "A soldier of the Revolution, a Sergeant in Washington's light

guards with Mad Anthony Wayne at the battle of Stoney Point, then a prisoner

and confined on the ship Jersey, the notorious prison ship of the British

lying in N.Y. harbor. He escaped by filing off his chains with a nail." Later

about 1794 he was with Wayne in the Indian War and finally perished at sea

about 1800. The Mass. records show that Henry Axtell of Berkley began service

in the army about June 1, 1776, and was finally discharged June 9, 1783 by

General Washington, term of service having expired. His name is on the list

of soldiers entitled to honorary badges for faithful service. Said Axtell

served from Jan. 1, 1777; reported entitled to wear two stripes. The

descriptive list gives stature, 5 ft. 7 in., complexion and hair light. He

was a farmer.
