Note on Husband: William AXTELL

bap. in Berkley, Mass., Aug. 29, 1742; lived in Taunton; married Mercy

Linkoln of Taunton June 23, 1763. A deed dated 1768 runs thus: "For the sum

of 58 pounds of lawful money Isaac Hodges conveys a tract of land in Norton

to William Axtell of Taunton." In 1790 he was in Norton, Mass., and the same

year moved to Sutton, Mass., settling in the southwest part of town. His war

record shows his great loyalty to his country: "He marched at the alarm April

19, 1775; he again served under Capt. Isaac Hodges from Sept. 25, 1777 to

Oct. 31, 1777, on secret expedition, and again in 1778." He is described as

35 years old, 5 ft., 7 in. high, with dark complexion and black hair and eyes.
