Note on Marriage

Likely to be Joseph, he would be 21. Can't work out his wife. Typically she would appear listed under the same vol and page and could be reverse indexed through the ancestery.co.uk system, but when checked two women were listed and no other men (total of 3 people). This is probably because the entry of BMDs is still be carried out. The two names are Alice Austin and Jane Penny. [Jon Axtell]

After checking on the 1891 census, there is a Joseph Axtell witi a wife Jane and children Henry and Nellie. So Jane Penny is likely to be his wife. Not totally confirmed yet though. [Jon Axtell]

Confirmed to be Jane Penny from parish marriage register entry [Jon Axtell]

Note on Husband: Joseph AXTELL

9. You stated birth certificate of William signed with a cross. My mother, margaret Webb knows that both her grandparents, Joseph and Jane (nee Penny were completely illiterate, so what you have found is to be expected; [Mark Webb]3

Note on Wife: Jane PENNY (1)

Unable to decide on her parent's and siblings. There are two Jane Penny's in the 1881 census, both born about 1862 in Redbourn. Likely that their father's are brother's or some other relationship. But because of the same date for their birth registrations, it is not possible to decide until the actual birth and marriage certificates are checked and actual dates found. Given a choice and since Joseph is an argicultural labourer, it'll be the straw platter Jane who is the correct choice.

Jane Penny the straw platter's family is the head of the household her mother Charlotte (b1837 Redbourn), aunt (sister of Charlotte) Sarah (b1826 Redbourn), uncle (brother of Charlotte) William (b1826 Redbourn), Walter (b1868 Redbourn), and grandmother (mother of Charlotte) Dorcas (b1798 Redbourn). ED 8/Folio 15/Page 15/16 Redbourn - Harpenden, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England

Jane Penny the silk weaver's family is the head of the household her father James (b1832 Redbourn), mother Hannah (b1834 Flamstead), Thomas (b1865 Redbourn), Ellen (b 1871 Redbourn), George (b1874 Redbourn), and Rose (b1876 Redbourn). ED 8/Folio 15/Page 15 Redbourn - Harpenden, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, UK

Looking further back in the census records shows a Jane Penny in the 1871 census born abt 1861 in Redbourn, Hertfordshire. Her family is the head of the household her father James (b1846 Redbourn), mother Emmer (b 1846 Flamstead), William (b1856), Frederick (b1859 Redbourn), Thomas (b1865 Redbourn), Henry (b1867 Redbourn), and Helen (b1870 Redbourn). Not quite a perfect match with Jane the silk weaver since the mother is different which could be due to death/divorce, but her father James matches, as does Thomas. The other siblingings might have left home by the next census in 1881. ED 9/Folio 61/Page 41/Household 152 Redbourn - Harpenden, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, UK

Also in the 1871 census records shows a Jane Penny born abt 1863 in Redbourn, Hertfordshire. Her family is the head of the household her grandmother (though listed as mother) Dorcas Penny (b1802 Redbourn), her mother (listed as daughter of Dorcas) Charlotte (b1838 Redbourn), her aunt Sarah (b1826), her uncle William (b1823), her cousin or sister Elizabeth (b1859 Redbourn), her cousin or sister Louisa (b1863 Redbourn), and her brother Walter (b1869 Redbourn). Elizabeth and Louisa could be sisters or the could be daughters of her uncle or aunt. ED 8/Folio 60/Page 29/Household 143 Redbourn - Harpenden, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, UK [Jon Axtell]

Looking at the parish register entry for Jane's marriage to Joseph, a Frederick Penny is listed as a witness. This seems to indicate that it is Jane from the 1871 census, born about 1861. There is still a mismatch in the birth dates with the marriage entry showing her age to be 29 making the year 1855, whilst the census shows 1861. The census is likely to be wrong though. However, the birth register only shows two Jane Penny's, both born in 1862 in St Albans district, with a Jane Ann Penny born in 1852 in Edmonton district. This means that Jane's birth can't be pinpointed yet, though her family is now known. [Jon Axtell]
